Description

Jersey Samaritans Branch was created in April 1961.

We are a close knit, diverse community of volunteers from a wide cross-section of society.

Samaritans is the charity that prevents suicide through the power of human connection.

Connecting people in crisis with trained volunteers who will always listen.

People calling for change with those who need to listen.

People who've been there before with those struggling now.

FAQ
What is the purpose of Samaritans?

Samaritans mission is to prevent suicide and to offer hope and support to those affected.

Why should I donate?

Samaritans Jersey is totally reliant on income from donations and fund raising. Your donations support our confidential, listening service for people in emotional distress, which is vital for preventing suicide and providing hope. Donations also help towards our community outreach, school programmes, as well as support for prison listeners.

How many volunteers does Samaritans have, and how many calls do they handle each year?

In 2024 Samaritans answered 3.3 million calls for help. Over 23000 volunteers averaged 70000 calls per month.

If I volunteer, will I be trained?

Samaritans provides comprehensive training for its volunteers. It includes a six-week program covering active listening skills, adapting to different callers and how to handle calls effectively. The training is consistent across all branches and prepares new volunteers to support callers in need.

How can I find out more to help me decide is I want to volunteer.

We run at least two informal information evenings at the Branch to tell you all about what is entailed and to answer all of your questions.

What if I am currently studying for professional exams?

Due to the commitment required for study and revising for exams, it will be difficult to cope with the time required for Samaritans. So sadly, we will turn down your application.

How do I sign on?

Click on the volunteer link in the description above. This will take you to a form to input your details. One of our recruitment team will then contact you.
